A collection of coins from the STIXWOULD HOARD
A small hoard of North East Coast Staters found on Sunday 7th Sept 2008, recorded by the museum and subsequently handed back to the finders.

South Ferriby type

WC 6649

SOUTH FERRIBY. Au Stater. Obverse completely obliterated. ® Horse left, six-pointed star, "boot" (phallus?) and anchor with pellets in spirals. Spink # 390. Van Arsdell: 819-3. Only three others with this reverse die in the CCI. From the same dies as DRIFF 01. A very rare and interesting type linked to the trefoil type by the style of the reverse die.

KITE TYPE. Au Stater. Vestiges of wreath Pattern. ® Kite shaped object with four pellets above horse left, three pellets below tail and spiral below horse. Spink # 392. BM 3181. Van Arsdell: 825-1. This coin CCI 04.0994. Generally this type were weakly struck and on odd shaped flan's. From the same dies as BM 3181. Comments by Dr. Philip de Jersey: Five others from this pair of dies, not including examples in Driffield hoard (Sills 1/5). Fifty-six of the basic VA 825 type recorded.

This coin CCI 04.0993. Central perfect metal and very attractive. Comments by Dr. Philip de Jersey: Two others this pair of dies (not including Driffield); usual obverse, here very worn, with a late reverse (Sills 1/9). Forty-nine others of basic type.

Ex Spink 68 (22-23 March 1989), lot 528 (cited as being ex Norweb collection [but not from the four Spink sales of that collection nor in SCBI 161]).
