E[DWARD] DEI GRA RE[(X)], crowned bust facing; V to left of neck. ® CIVITAS [DER]AM, long cross pattée with three pellets in each angle; D in centre. Spink # 2143. North 1699. Withers Durham Type 4a. 13mm. A very rare Edward IV halfpenny struck at the Durham ecclesiastical mint of Bishop William Dudley from dies made locally under special permission granted in 1473. Initial mark, rose. The E of RE(X) is misaligned (markedly low) in relation to the other letters of the obverse legend. Cracked in two places (see image) but in a stable condition.
