WRA 10985

Roman Openwork Plate Brooch. An openwork skeuomorphic plate brooch cast in bronze, formed as a swastika within a circular border. 2nd century AD. See Richard Hattatt, Brooches of Antiquity, p. 223, no. 1154a. 32 mm diameter. A complete example with the pin and catchplate intact; patina stable but patchy.

In the Roman world, the swastika was a common geometric and solar motif, symbolising good fortune, movement, and protection. Its use on brooches was purely decorative or symbolic.
