Medieval Strap-end (15th Century)
WMA 7201
Medieval Strap-end. A copper‑alloy strap‑end made from six separate pieces that are shaped and riveted together to form the scene of a mitred bishop holding a book? or praying, standing on a plinth within an architectural frame. Circa 15th Century. Cf. Michael Mitchiner, Medieval Pilgrim & Secular Badges, pp.20–24 & p.265. Lincolnshire. 36 mm × 19 mm. It is uncertain who the figure represents, but Thomas Becket is a possibility. A 15th‑century pilgrim souvenir from the shrine of St Mary at the Priory Church in Tobelaine has a similar architectural framework. Patchy patina but extremely rare.
