Wife of Constantine I • Augusta
Fausta was the daughter of Maximian and became Augusta upon her marriage to Constantine I in AD 307. Her position strengthened the alliance between the Constantinian and Herculean dynasties during a turbulent political era. She appears frequently in imperial propaganda promoting dynastic continuity and the legitimacy of Constantine’s heirs. Her coinage, though limited, emphasises themes of fertility, stability, and the future of the imperial household. In 326 she was implicated in a palace scandal involving Crispus, leading to her execution under unclear circumstances. Her death marked a dramatic rupture within the Constantinian family and ended her brief but influential role as empress.
