Faustina I — Coins for Sale

Faustina I

Wife of Antoninus Pius • Deified Augusta

Faustina the Elder was the wife of Antoninus Pius and became Augusta upon his accession in AD 138. Highly respected for her dignity and charitable reputation, she played a prominent public role during the early Antonine period. After her death in AD 140 she was deified, and her cult became one of the most visible imperial commemorations of the era. Her posthumous coinage is extensive, emphasising themes of eternity, virtue, and divine favour. These issues helped reinforce the legitimacy and stability of Antoninus’ long and peaceful reign.
