Gordian III — Coins for Sale

Gordian III

238–244 AD

Gordian III became emperor at the age of thirteen during the political upheavals of AD 238, making him the youngest sole ruler in Roman history. His reign was dominated by senior advisors and the influence of the Praetorian Guard, though it remained relatively stable compared to the surrounding decades. Much of his rule focused on the eastern frontier, where renewed conflict with the Sasanian Empire demanded major military action. Gordian’s early campaigns were initially successful, but he died in AD 244 under uncertain circumstances during the Persian war. His coinage is abundant and varied, reflecting both his youth and the empire’s efforts to project continuity and legitimacy.
