First wife of Constantius I • Mother of Constantine I
Helena, later revered as St Helena, was the first wife of Constantius I and mother of Constantine the Great. Raised from modest origins, she became Augusta after Constantine’s accession and played a prominent role in the imperial household. Christian tradition credits her with a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and the discovery of the True Cross, greatly enhancing her legacy. Her coinage, issued widely across the empire, emphasises themes of security and stability through the SECVRITAS REIPVBLICE type. Helena died around AD 330 and was honoured with an elaborate imperial mausoleum in Rome.
