Julian II
363–364 AD
Julian II, known as “the Apostate,” succeeded Constantius II in AD 361 after a successful revolt in Gaul. A capable general, he restored frontier security and reduced taxation, earning strong support from the western provinces. His religious policy attempted to revive traditional Roman paganism, reversing many Christian privileges granted by earlier emperors. Julian launched an ambitious campaign against Persia in AD 363, initially advancing deep into enemy territory. He was mortally wounded during a retreat and died shortly after, ending the last major pagan revival in the Roman Empire.
