Maximinus II Daia rose to prominence under Galerius and became Caesar in AD 305 during the Second Tetrarchy. His rule in the eastern provinces was marked by heavy taxation, ambitious building projects, and a strong military presence. He was a fierce opponent of Christianity, issuing some of the last and harshest persecutions before Constantine’s reforms. After the death of Galerius, Maximinus struggled for dominance against Licinius and Constantine. Defeated by Licinius in AD 313, he fled and died shortly after, ending his bid for control of the eastern empire.
