Postumus
259–268 AD
Postumus founded the breakaway Gallic Empire in AD 259 after a revolt against Gallienus, establishing control over Gaul, Britain and parts of Spain. His reign brought relative stability to the western provinces during a period of crisis for the central Roman Empire. Postumus issued abundant and often high‑quality coinage, emphasising prosperity, military strength and legitimacy. He successfully defended the Rhine frontier but refused to march on Rome, preserving his western power base. Postumus was eventually killed by his own troops after preventing them from sacking Mogontiacum, ending one of the most successful separatist regimes of the 3rd century.
