Probus
276–282 AD
Probus, one of the most capable soldier‑emperors of the 3rd century, rose through the ranks under Aurelian and Tacitus. His reign focused on restoring stability after decades of crisis, defeating numerous barbarian incursions along the Rhine and Danube. Probus was also known for large‑scale reconstruction projects, including agricultural reforms and the resettlement of defeated tribes. His coinage is abundant, varied and artistically refined, reflecting themes of military virtue, prosperity and divine favour. He was killed by mutinous troops in AD 282, shortly before Carus assumed power.
