Ulpia Severina, wife of Aurelian, remains one of the most enigmatic empresses of the 3rd century. Her coinage is unusually extensive for an imperial consort, suggesting a prominent public role during Aurelian’s reign. Some scholars believe she may have briefly exercised authority after Aurelian’s assassination in AD 275, though the evidence is debated. Her issues often feature Venus, Concordia and other stabilising themes, reflecting the regime’s efforts to restore unity after years of crisis.
