Severus Alexander
222–235 AD
Severus Alexander became emperor at the age of fourteen, guided initially by his grandmother Julia Maesa and later by his mother Julia Mamaea. His reign emphasised moderation, legal reform and diplomacy, contrasting sharply with the militarism of his predecessor Elagabalus. Efforts to negotiate with invading Germanic tribes alienated the army, who expected decisive military action. Growing unrest among the legions culminated in his assassination alongside his mother in AD 235. His death marked the end of the Severan dynasty and the beginning of the 3rd‑century crisis.
