Theodosius I — Coins for Sale

Theodosius I

379–395 AD

Theodosius I, known as “Theodosius the Great,” became emperor in AD 379 during a period of military and religious upheaval. He stabilised the eastern empire after the Gothic War and integrated many Goths into the Roman army. His reign is notable for making Nicene Christianity the official state religion and for suppressing pagan practices. Theodosius reunited the Roman Empire under a single ruler before his death in AD 395—the last emperor to do so. His coinage reflects themes of imperial authority, military strength and divine sanction.
