Valentinian I
364–375 AD
Valentinian I, founder of the Valentinianic dynasty, was a tough and militarily focused emperor who restored stability to the Western Empire. A career soldier, he strengthened frontier defences along the Rhine and Danube and conducted vigorous campaigns against Germanic tribes. His administration is noted for firm fiscal policies and a strong stance on imperial authority. Though personally austere, he tolerated a wide range of religious practices, including Nicene and Arian Christianity. He died suddenly in AD 375 during negotiations with the Quadi, leaving a secure but tense frontier situation.
