Valentinian II
375–392 AD
Valentinian II became emperor at the age of four following the sudden death of his father, Valentinian I. His early reign was dominated by powerful figures including his mother Justina, the general Arbogast, and the bishop Ambrose of Milan. Religious conflict between Arian and Nicene factions shaped much of his political environment. Increasing tensions with Arbogast culminated in Valentinian’s mysterious death in AD 392, widely regarded as suspicious. His coinage reflects themes of restoration, imperial legitimacy and military authority during a turbulent period.
