AELIUS
Caesar 136–138 AD
Lucius Aelius was adopted by Hadrian in AD 136 and designated heir to the empire, despite having little military experience. His refined manners and senatorial connections made him a politically convenient choice, though his health was notoriously fragile. Aelius never ruled; he died suddenly on 1 January AD 138 before Hadrian himself. His brief tenure as Caesar produced a modest but distinctive coinage, valued today for its rarity and its place in the succession leading to Antoninus Pius.
