CLODIUS ALBINUS

195–197 AD

Clodius Albinus, a distinguished senator and general of North African origin, was proclaimed Caesar by Septimius Severus in AD 193 as part of a temporary political alliance. Relations soon deteriorated, and Albinus declared himself emperor in Britain, leading to a major civil war. His forces were defeated at the Battle of Lugdunum in AD 197, one of the largest clashes of the imperial age. His coinage, struck both as Caesar and Augustus, is notable for its quality and variety, reflecting his brief but ambitious bid for power.
