JULIA PAULA
First Wife of Elagabalus
Julia Cornelia Paula was chosen as the first wife of Elagabalus shortly after his accession in AD 218, largely to lend dignity and legitimacy to the new regime. Coming from a distinguished senatorial family, she was briefly elevated to Augusta, but her marriage was soon dissolved when Elagabalus dismissed her in favour of the Vestal Virgin Aquilia Severa. Paula’s coinage is limited and highly sought after, reflecting both her short tenure and the turbulent politics of the Severan court.
