MARCUS AURELIUS
Marcus Aurelius, philosopher‑emperor and author of the *Meditations*, is remembered as one of Rome’s most thoughtful and dutiful rulers. Adopted by Antoninus Pius, he served a long apprenticeship as Caesar before becoming Augustus in AD 161. His reign was dominated by frontier wars, plague, and internal strain, yet he maintained a reputation for justice, discipline, and Stoic endurance. His coinage spans both his early years under Antoninus and his later joint rule with Lucius Verus and then Commodus, offering one of the richest and most varied imperial series of the 2nd century.
