MAXIMINUS I
235–238 AD
Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus, known as Maximinus Thrax, rose from humble Thracian origins to become emperor after the assassination of Severus Alexander in AD 235. A towering figure of immense physical strength, he ruled largely from the frontiers, directing campaigns against the Germanic tribes. His heavy taxation and distance from Rome fuelled widespread resentment, leading to the revolt of the Gordiani and ultimately his downfall. Maximinus was murdered by his own troops during the siege of Aquileia in AD 238. His coinage marks the beginning of the turbulent “Crisis of the Third Century.”
