PLAUTILLA
Wife of Caracalla
Fulvia Plautilla, daughter of the powerful praetorian prefect Plautianus, became Augusta upon her marriage to Caracalla in AD 202. The union was politically motivated and deeply unhappy, with Caracalla reportedly despising her. After the fall and execution of her father in AD 205, Plautilla was exiled to Sicily and later to Lipari, where she was eventually killed on Caracalla’s orders. Her coinage, struck only during her brief period as empress, is admired for its fine portraiture and elegant reverse types emphasising harmony and virtue.
