SALONINUS
(As Caesar) 258–260 AD
Publius Licinius Cornelius Saloninus, son of Gallienus and grandson of Valerian I, was elevated to the rank of Caesar in AD 258. Stationed at Cologne under the guardianship of the general Silvanus, he was intended to represent imperial authority in the troubled western provinces. Rising tensions with Postumus, who had been proclaimed emperor by his troops, led to a brief civil conflict. Cologne fell in AD 260, and Saloninus was executed shortly thereafter. His coinage, struck primarily at Cologne, is scarce and historically significant, reflecting the fragmentation of imperial power during the Crisis of the Third Century.
