Titus, elder son of Vespasian, succeeded his father in AD 79 after a distinguished military and administrative career. Celebrated for his role in the Jewish War and the capture of Jerusalem, he became known as a generous and humane ruler, earning the admiration of contemporaries. His short reign was marked by major disasters—the eruption of Vesuvius, a devastating fire in Rome, and a plague—yet his compassionate response enhanced his reputation. Titus continued the Flavian building programme, completing the Colosseum and other monumental works. His coinage reflects themes of prosperity, divine favour, and dynastic continuity.
