VALENTINIAN I
364–375 AD
Valentinian I, founder of the Valentinian dynasty, was a tough and energetic soldier‑emperor who restored discipline to the army and strengthened the western frontiers. His reign was marked by major defensive works along the Rhine and Danube, as well as firm—sometimes harsh—domestic governance. Though often severe, he was respected for his administrative competence and military leadership. His sudden death in AD 375 left the empire divided between his sons Gratian and Valentinian II. His silver coinage, especially siliquae, is admired for its crisp engraving and varied reverse types celebrating imperial authority and the restoration of the state.
