AELFWALD II – Silver Sceat

Aelfwald II AR Sceat – FLEVALDVS around cross – CVDCLLS around large pellet in pelleted circle – Spink 859 – uncleaned and as found – unique new moneyer

WS 6425

AELFWALD II. 806–808 AD. AR Sceat. FLEVALDVS around cross. CVDCLLS (Cuthgils) around large pellet inside pelleted circle. Spink 859. Uncleaned and as found. A unique and historical piece! Aelfwald II coins are very rare at best, and only known with the moneyer Cudheard. This is a new moneyer for this king. Notes on the moneyers. Cudheard is known to strike coins in continuation for Aethelred I, Eardwulf, Aelfwald II and Eanred. Cudcils is known to strike the Aethelred I shrine type and for no others until now. There is no reason why Cudcils didn't continue striking for Eardwulf and possibly Eanred, but as yet no coins have been found.
