HENRY I — KNARESBOROUGH AREA HOARD (BMC XV)

The “Knaresborough Area Hoard” was deposited circa 1135 and consisted of 178 silver pennies of Henry I, all of BMC Type XV. The hoard was discovered by a group of metal detectorists between 20 April 2008 and 15 April 2009. The reason for its concealment — and more intriguingly, its non‑recovery — remains unknown.
The hoard was handed over to the appropriate authorities and studied by the British Museum before being returned to the landowner and finders in May 2011. All coins listed below are of good silver, uncleaned, with a mixture of bright and toned surfaces, some retaining light traces of soil.
Knaresborough (Chenaresburg in the Domesday Survey) is a historic market town situated 17 miles north‑west of York, beside the River Nidd.
