Magnentius — Coins for Sale

Magnentius

350–353 AD

Magnentius seized power in AD 350 after a military revolt in Gaul, presenting himself as a restorer of stability and traditional Roman values. His regime gained wide support in the western provinces, but he faced immediate opposition from Constantius II in the East. Magnentius issued distinctive coinage, including the famous Christogram type, reflecting both political messaging and Christian symbolism. After a series of defeats culminating at Mursa and Mons Seleucus, his support collapsed. He took his own life in AD 353, ending one of the last major western usurpations of the 4th century.
