JULIA DOMNA
Wife of Septimius Severus
Julia Domna, born in Emesa in Syria, became Augusta upon the accession of her husband Septimius Severus in AD 193. Highly educated and politically influential, she played a central role in the Severan dynasty, acting as advisor, diplomat, and patron of philosophy. Her coinage is extensive and varied, emphasising virtues such as fertility, harmony, piety, and public welfare. After the murder of her son Geta and the troubled reign of Caracalla, she remained a powerful figure until her death in AD 217. Her portraits are among the most recognisable of the Roman imperial series.
