PHILIP I
244–249 AD
Marcus Julius Philippus, known as Philip the Arab, rose from provincial origins to become emperor after the death of Gordian III. His reign was marked by diplomatic efforts to stabilise Rome’s eastern frontiers and by the lavish celebration of the empire’s millennium in AD 248. Despite attempts at moderation and reform, Philip faced mounting military and political pressures, culminating in rebellion by Decius. Defeated in battle in AD 249, he was killed by his own troops. His coinage is abundant and varied, reflecting themes of prosperity, piety, and imperial legitimacy.
