SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS
193–211 AD
Lucius Septimius Severus rose to power in AD 193 during the turbulent Year of the Five Emperors, establishing the Severan dynasty and restoring stability after the chaos of Commodus’ final years. A skilled general, he campaigned successfully in the East and Britain, strengthening Rome’s frontiers and consolidating imperial authority. His reign marked a shift toward a more openly militarised autocracy, with increased reliance on the army and the Praetorian Guard. Severus’ extensive coinage reflects his military victories, religious piety, and efforts to legitimise his rule. He died in York in AD 211, leaving the empire to his sons Caracalla and Geta.
