VALERIAN II
(As Caesar) 256–258 AD
Valerian II, eldest son of Gallienus and grandson of Valerian I, was elevated to the rank of Caesar during the turbulent mid‑third century. Intended as heir and dynastic stabiliser, he was placed under the guardianship of Ingenuus on the Danubian frontier. His early death in AD 258, possibly from illness but later associated with political intrigue, triggered unrest and contributed to Ingenuus’ revolt. Posthumous coinage issued in his honour emphasised his consecration and the hope of divine favour for the imperial house. These issues are prized for their poignant imagery and historical significance.
